I was lucky enough to join Rod on his Unplugged and Seated MTV special, featuring Ron Wood, then spending 2 years with him on the road playing 12 string, accordion and mandolin. Fantastic experience!

  • John Prine

Early in my session career, Howie Epstein from Petty's band asked if I wanted to join him on some recording with John Prine. Overjoyed at the prospect, I played on the track All the Best for his Grammy winning release, The Missing Years One tune led to another and at one session John shyly asked if I ever went on tour and was willing to go on a tour opening up for Bonnie Raritt. I said sure if I could bring my friend Bill. He said to bring him around. We ended up rehearsing at Johns house in Nashville for a few days before we played in front of 5000 folks. This was a start of an almost 10 year run with the folk legend.

After a long while seeking the holy grail of record deals, my old time partner, Bill Bonk, and I got one when we had given up and decided to play some fun acoustic skiffle rock at the famed Fairfax club, Molly Malone's. After playing every Tuesday for a few weeks, record labels came around to check us and the Havalina's as a new big thing. We ended up signed to Geffen Records and having our heros Kenny Edwards and David Lindley playing on the record. Later Nigel Harrison from Blondie was our bassist. We brought in out college buddy Scott Babcock to play drums and we were living the dream!

My first tour ever! A manager that I had called me one morning and told me that a woman in her apartment building managed Joan and their keyboard player has just quit. Did she know anybody? She gave them my number and my first reaction was to say no. Luckily, I didn't and I learned alot from my band mates, especially Roly Salley. I played the piano and a Prophet 600!.
